Summary

Activity Description:

Community pharmacies play a pivotal role in expanding access to HIV prevention and treatment. This continuing education program explores practical strategies for pharmacists to engage in HIV screening, counseling, and linkage to care; optimize antiretroviral therapy management; and promote vaccination and preventive health among people living with HIV. Participants will gain actionable insights to implement scalable HIV services within the community pharmacy setting, supporting both individual patient outcomes and public health goals.

At the end of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Identify opportunities for community pharmacies to engage in HIV prevention through screening, counseling, and access to HIV self-testing, PrEP, and PEP services.
2. Describe key considerations in dispensing antiretroviral therapies, including recognizing common drug–drug interactions, managing side effects, and identifying opportunities for preventive care such as lipid management and vaccination.
3. Recommend appropriate vaccines and timing for people living with HIV, based on CD4 count, immune status, and current CDC/ACIP guidelines.
4. Develop a plan for implementing scalable HIV care initiatives within community pharmacy settings, ranging from basic awareness and testing to collaborative practice models and clinical research participation.

Texas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements.
