Summary

Activity Description:

This continuing education session provides an in-depth review of the 2025 GOLD guidelines for COPD, with a focus on inhaler therapy and patient counseling. COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide, and respiratory diseases rank sixth in the United States. Despite the critical role of maintenance inhalers in preventing exacerbations, adherence remains suboptimal. Pharmacists play a key role in optimizing therapy and improving patient outcomes.

After completing this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Evaluate the signs and symptoms of COPD and use mMRC and CAT scores to assess disease severity.
2. Design individualized COPD inhaler regimens based on patient dyspnea and/or exacerbation history.
3. Counsel patients on new and refill COPD inhalers, including proper technique, therapeutic purpose, efficacy, and safety considerations.

After completing this activity, technicians will be able to:
1. Identify common signs and symptoms of COPD and recognize assessment tools such as mMRC and CAT scores.
2. List the types of COPD inhalers and their primary therapeutic purposes.
3. Recognize safety, storage, and handling requirements for COPD inhalers.

Texas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements.
