Summary

Description: Despite the daily interactions with this patient population, identifying common side effects of Alzheimer’s therapies remains a challenge for most pharmacists. Providing pharmacy professionals with the mechanism of action (MoA), clinical incidence, and clinical management for each adverse effect will help narrow the knowledge gap that exists within the pharmacy setting. This presentation will provide training through didactic learning in lecture style, opportunities to self-assess with knowledge-check questions, and even some hands-on learning as assessment tools such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) will be presented. With this knowledge, both community and clinical pharmacists will have the opportunity to ensure proper patient safety surrounding Alzheimer’s care and prevent the development of adverse drug events in geriatric populations.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:

  1. List new treatment modalities and medications for Alzheimer's.
  2. Identify common side effects of Alzheimer’s therapies.
  3. Review new Alzheimer’s treatments in the drug discovery pipeline.

Texas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements.
