Summary
Activity Description:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Texas, with more than 21,000 new diagnoses per year. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the state, affecting more than 3,500 Texans. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can make a difference in the lives of these patients! This presentation will help attendees understand the prevalence and risk factors of metastatic breast cancer. Furthermore, learn about common medications used to treat breast cancer, as well as novel therapies and their implications for treatment.
At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Summarize key statistics and risk factors associated with breast cancer.
2. Identify updates to the current breast cancer screening recommendations and guidelines.
3. Describe potential adverse effects and long-term impacts of various metastatic breast cancer treatments.
4. Develop strategies for effective patient counseling on breast cancer risk factors and medications, addressing adherence, side effect management, and lifestyle modifications.
5. Analyze landmark clinical trials of novel therapies for metastatic breast cancer and discuss their implications for treatment.
At the completion of this activity, pharmacy technicians will be able to:
1. Identify common medications used in metastatic breast cancer treatment and potential side effects.
2. Assist patients with understanding medication instructions.
3. Recognize signs of adverse medications reactions and report them to the pharmacists.
