Summary

Activity Description:

More than 1.8 million children and adults in Texas have asthma, according to the CDC, and many of them suffer from severe and/or uncontrolled asthma. Pharmacists regularly encounter asthma patients and are well-positioned to assist them with their treatment. In this session, learn about the role of oral corticosteroids (OCS) in treating asthma. In addition, learn how to recognize and counsel patients about uncontrolled asthma and the negative effects of OCS.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Summarize the impact of asthma on the broad population, highlighting demographics that are more likely to suffer from severe and/or uncontrolled asthma.
2. Describe the role of oral corticosteroids (OCS) in asthma exacerbation management and the need for OCS stewardship.
3. Counsel patients on the hallmarks of uncontrolled asthma and the negative effects of OCS.
4. Recognize signs of uncontrolled asthma and provide referral to a local asthma specialist as needed.

At the completion of this activity, technicians will be able to:
1. Summarize the impact of asthma on the broad population, highlighting demographics that are more likely to suffer from severe and/or uncontrolled asthma.
2. Describe the role of oral corticosteroids (OCS) in asthma exacerbation management and the need for OCS stewardship.
