Summary
Endocrine disorders are among the most common and complex medical conditions in small animals, yet pharmacy education rarely covers veterinary medications. This session introduces pharmacists to the fundamentals of canine and feline endocrine diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and Cushing’s disease, and the medications used to manage them. Participants will explore species-specific considerations, dosing nuances, medication safety, and communication strategies that support both veterinarians and pet owners.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this session, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Identify major endocrine disorders in small animals and their standard treatment options.
2. Recognize key differences between human and veterinary medication use, including dosing, formulations, and safety precautions.
3. Evaluate prescription accuracy for pet medications and identify red flags that may impact patient outcomes.
4. Provide clear, compassionate counseling to pet owners, enhancing adherence and safe medication use. 5. Collaborate more effectively with veterinarians as part of an interprofessional care team.
6. Identify and use reliable resources for veterinary medications and disorders.
