Summary

Description: Precepting learners requires having many tough conversations that can be considered antagonistic or overly judgmental, resulting in not obtaining the results desired. Based on insights from the book Crucial Conversations, this presentation will equip preceptors with techniques to foster open dialogue, resolve conflicts, and guide learners effectively, even in challenging situations. Participants will learn strategies for creating a safe and constructive environment, maintaining mutual respect, and handling sensitive topics confidently. With these skills, pharmacist preceptors can cultivate trust, provide constructive feedback, and support the growth and development of future pharmacists.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:

  1. Describe key principles and techniques from Crucial Conversations for fostering open, respectful dialogue during challenging precepting situations.
  2. Apply strategies to create a psychologically safe learning environment that encourages mutual respect, trust, and constructive feedback with pharmacy learners.
  3. Demonstrate effective communication approaches for navigating difficult conversations, providing performance feedback, and resolving conflicts in the precepting relationship.

Texas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements.
