When Time Is Short: Assessing and Addressing Adherence Problems

Summary

Non-adherence to medication regimens now costs over $500 billion a year. Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based, patient-centered approach to improving adherence to medication regimens, health behaviors, and outcomes. Traditional or acronym-based approaches to motivational interviewing have often caused problems for health care professions (HCPs). HCPs often have difficulty remembering what each letter of each acronym stands for and, more specifically, when to use that letter in the acronym.

This session will introduce pharmacists to a new and very practical approach to motivational interviewing that is highly effective in improving adherence in time limited environments. This program will use multiple mini case examples and dialogs to demonstrate the use of this approach to improving adherence to medication regimens and health behaviors, focused on managing chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

At the completion of this session, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Apply a new approach to motivational interviewing (MI) skills for improving adherence to medication regimens and health behaviors.
2. Distinguish between the appropriateness and effectiveness of various motivational interviewing skills.
3. Critically evaluate case examples and respond with appropriate skills and solutions.

At the completion of this session, technicians will be able to:
1. Describe improvement in patient care that can be made through the use of motivational interviewing.
2. Describe techniques used to implement motivational interviewing strategies.
3. List key principles and strategies of motivational interviewing.
