Summary

Telehealth has been around for a long time, and has expanded to include many different practice areas, including telepharmacy. Since its introduction to the U.S. in 2001, telepharmacy has quickly advanced as technology allows for the safe and effective delivery of pharmacy services to patients at a distance. Today, half the country allows the practice, and pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in various practice settings are finding creative ways to serve underserved patients through telepharmacy. This presentation discusses the history of telepharmacy, how telepharmacy works, telepharmacy technology, and takes a look at telepharmacy regulations by state.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Explain the history of telepharmacy and the evolution of the practice in the U.S.
2. Describe the workflow of outpatient telepharmacy, and the scope of practice for pharmacists and technicians.
3. Discuss the combination of software and hardware utilized in telepharmacy solutions.
4. Know the basics of inventory management, ordering, and controls in the telepharmacy.
5. Understand the implications of telepharmacy regulations and how they vary by state.
