Summary

Texas State Senator Kelly Hancock serves as chair of the powerful Senate Business and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over health insurers, PBMs, and many other areas important to pharmacy that directly affect patient access and business. During the 2019 legislative session, Chairman Hancock's committee passed payment for pharmacists' services and pharmacist provider status that became law in Texas. Additionally, the committee passed comprehensive PBM reform legislation, although the bill failed to receive a vote on the Senate floor.

In this keynote address, as we look ahead to 2021, Chairman Hancock will share his insights on how the current coronavirus pandemic may impact the 87th legislative session that begins in January. The Chairman will speak to health care challenges Texans face and his thoughts as a leader on pharmacy business and health care issues.

At the completion of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Discuss health care challenges Texans face.
2. Describe how the current pandemic will impact the 2021 legislative session.
3. Identify opportunities for pharmacy to play a bigger role in the healthcare of Texans.
