Summary

Learn about clinical pearls of gabapentin and its upward trend of misuse and abuse in recent years. This session will inform pharmacists about gabapentin as a whole (e.g., its mechanism of action, indications both on and off-label and pharmacokinetics), how and why misuse and abuse of gabapentin occurs, and what considerations to analyze moving forward. Get updated on recent literature that discusses statistics of this information. Join in discussion of whether gabapentin should be more heavily regulated and where pharmacists play a role in the process. Consider what red flags should be examined throughout this process and what other options are available for indications for gabapentin.

At the completion of this activity, the pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Comprehend the relevant pathophysiology and role of gabapentin.
2. Understand statistics of prescription drug misuse and abuse.
3. Evaluate the available literature that discusses current misuse, abuse and overdose of gabapentin.
4. Discuss options and implement a plan to prevent abuse.
