SMOF, Omegaven, or Intralipid - Which one for PNALD, BPD, ROP

Published by Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group and Texas Pharmacy Association

Summary

Dr. Kathleen Gura, PharmD, BCNSP, FPPAG will conduct a 1-hour knowledge-based continuing education webinar program. For more than 50 years, nutrition support practitioners in the US had limited options when it came to intravenous lipid emulsions (ILE). In 2016, a mixed oil emulsion comprised of olive/fish/mct/soybean oil was approved for adults and in July 2018 fish oil ILE was approved for use in pediatric patients with parenteral nutrition associated liver disease. Knowing when to use what product has become a challenge. This webinar will hopefully de-mystify the practitioner and learn where each product fits in clinical practice and understand the benefits (and limitations of each).

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Understand when lipid restriction protocols can be safely used
2. Describe what essential fatty acid deficiency is and interpret a triene:tetraene ratio
3. List which patients should not receive fish oil monotherapy
