Medical Billing 101

Summary

The CEO of the Washington State Pharmacy Association will share his firsthand experiences in Washington, one of the first states to pass statewide provider status. Washington's experience offers a road map to payment for services in Texas, which passed two bills this year amending the Insurance Code to allow pharmacists to be in provider networks and to be reimbursed for services that are within their scope of practice. This session will describe the enrollment process for health plan provider networks, explain the billing process and differences between billing a pharmacy claim and a medical claim, identify technology gaps and solutions, and describe the essential elements for billing a medical claim.

At the completion of this activity, the pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Describe the enrollment process for health plan provider networks.
2. Explain the billing process and differences between billing a pharmacy claim and a medical claim.
3. Identify technology gaps and solutions.
4. Describe the essential elements for billing a medical claim.

”ACPETexas Pharmacy Association (154) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education will be provided to participants who completed all course requirements. This lesson is a knowledge-based CE activity and is targeted to pharmacists and technicians. This program has been approved for 1 contact hour of continuing education credit (0.1 CEU).

Jeff Rochon received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Washington in 1999. He is a licensed pharmacist and pharmacist preceptor in Washington State. Before joining the WSPA, he spent some time in numerous areas of pharmacy practice. He trained at the University of Washington Medical Center, helped develop a Community Practice Residency Program at Kelley-Ross Pharmacy and served as a staff pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Care Director.
